Living healthy as a busy Mom with two little boys

It sure comes off slowly doesn’t it September 28, 2011

I watch The Biggest Loser and Season 12 is just starting.  This season they have split the contestants into three teams divided by age.  Bonnie is one of the oldest contestants this season.  Compared to others, she has not had stellar weight loss in the first two weeks (although her loss is great for someone at home and not exercising 6-8 hours a day).  She lost I think 2 pounds week 1 and 3 pounds week 2.  And when she saw her week two loss her quote was the title to this post.

First of all, yes, it does come off slowly.  And I personally think that’s the best way for it to come off.  And some people may look at her and see failure when you see others losing upwards of 15 pounds in one week.  But, a loss is a loss.  She weighs less today than she did when she started.  Second, she has a bad knee which limits the intensity she can workout with weight-bearing exercises.  Thirdly (and most importantly), in an earlier segment of the show she met with the show’s physician.  It was revealed that in 1991 she had her stomach stapled and lost a significant amount of weight.  The doctor then explained to her that most of the weight she lost as a result of that surgery was muscle and not fat.  They didn’t say this on the show, but the net result of losing muscle and not fat is that her body’s metabolism slowed down.  A lot.  Muscle at rest burns many more calories than fat does.  That is why you need to weight train, even if you are just trying to lose weight and not build muscle.  A body’s first inclination when faced with decreased calories is to shed muscle and store fat.  Weight training will help maintain the muscle and thus keeping your metabolism working in your favor.

This is why quick fix diets and extreme weight loss surgeries typically don’t work in the long term.  Sure, there are examples of people where it has worked, but I believe they are the exception not the rule.  You didn’t gain weight overnight, so it’s ridiculous to think you’ll lose it overnight either.  I’m not planning on making it to my goal weight for a year or even more.  And I’m ok with that.  I’d rather it be a permanent change anyway.

Banana Pumpkin Muffins September 26, 2011

I start back at work a week from today.  : (   And so I’ve been trying to think of quick and easy, yet nutritious food and  snacks that I can prep in the evenings after the boys go to sleep.  I am all about spending as much time as possible with my kiddos and also getting enough sleep myself.  A tough enough task when you don’t also work full-time.  But I am determined.  Hopefully that, and some creativity, will make it happen.  I know I was able to mostly manage it with my first son.  But two kids is more than twice the work so we’ll see how I do with the two.

When we got back from our out of town trip last week I had two bananas that were on their last legs and needed to be used.  Also, with the cooling temps I have been craving some fall flavors so I went on a search for a recipe that called for both.  I ended up tweeking the recipe quite a bit to make it healthier and am very happy with the result.

Banana Pumpkin Muffins
Makes 21 muffins

  • 2 ripe bananas, mashed
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 1/3 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup Splenda
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup raisins, optional (I used craisins)
  • 3/4 cup walnut pieces, optional (I omitted)
  • Non-stick spray

  1. Preheat oven to 375F.  Spray two standard muffin pans with non-stick spray or line with cupcake liners.
  2. In a large bowl (or mixer bowl) stir together the mashed banana, eggs, yogurt, pumpkin, honey, and Splenda.
  3. In another bowl combine flour, oatmeal, baking powder, baking soda, salt, pie spice, and cinnamon.  Stir this mixture into flour mixture until just combined.  Fold in raisins/craisins & walnuts, if desired.  Pour into prepared pans.
  4. Bake at 350F for 28 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of muffins comes out clean.  Cool in pans for 10 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

We went out of town this past week.  My sister-in-law became a U.S. citizen on Tuesday so we wanted to be there to support her, and to show our boys what an honor and privilege it is to be a citizen here.  Once the ceremony was over we went up to my in-law’s to have the boys visit my Mother-in-law in the rehab center.  She is doing much better, but she does have a long way to go.

While we were gone I had intended to continue my workouts, but it was much harder to actually fit it in while completely out of my home.  I ran on the treadmill at the hotel Tuesday morning but nothing else (unless you count walking around the Smithsonian museum) until today.  I also didn’t count any calories and I did indulge in some chocolate and a lot of eating out.

The net result is that I gained a pound.  But I also gained a new-found appreciation for how eating right and exercising makes me feel.  While I was not working out or counting calories I felt sluggish and just blah.  I definitely feel better and have more energy when I work out and want to continue feeling that way.  Having that week off was such a good thing for my continued motivation.

It fits!!!!!!! September 16, 2011

One great benefit of losing weight is that old clothes fit, or at least fit better.  I’ve been enjoying going through old drawers and pulling things out that fit again.  I’ve also been more interested in making sure my hair looks nice, because I want my outside to look as good as I feel on the inside.

But this post isn’t about old clothes fitting.  It’s about this:

My BEAUTIFUL engagement/wedding rings are back on my finger!  I took them off in August 2008 when I was experiencing some major finger swelling while in my second trimester of pregnancy with C.  Now over 3 years and a whole other pregnancy later and the rings are back where they belong.   That has been one of my motivations so I’m definitely excited.  I can’t wait for the boys’ naptime so I can go workout.

Reflections on 10 years ago…. September 12, 2011

On September 11, 2001 I was a 23 year old single, young professional who had just moved back to my home state of Wisconsin after living in Los Angeles for a year.  Ironically, I think I was about the same weight I am today, maybe a little more.

Today I’m a married, not as young professional living in another state altogether with 2 wonderful sons.

I remember hearing stories on news programs of people who lost loved ones that horrific day and crying for their pain.  That is still the case.  I can’t help but cry for the parents who lost children, children who lost parents, spouses who lost the loves of their lives, and especially for the deceased fathers who never got to meet their children who were still unborn when they were murdered that day.

I chose to honor the dead yesterday by living the day to the fullest with my boys, because you never know when you may be forced to say Goodbye.

If you are reading this and were personally impacted that day, my prayers and sympathies are with you.  I will never forget.

60 Day Slimdown – Results September 7, 2011

The 60 days are done!  Wow.  This program really is great.  I can’t say enough good things about it.  Not only did I lose a bunch of weight and inches, but my fitness improved as well.  You can see the results below.

Below are my measurements:

  • Dominant Arm:  11.75 ( -1/4 inch since Day 50-1.25 inches since Day 1)
  • Chest: 39.5  (-1/2 inch since Day 50, -2.5 inches since Day 1)
  • Neck: 13 1/2 (-0 inches since Day 50, -1 inch since Day 1)
  • Natural Waistline: 34  (-3/4 inch since Day 50, -8.5 inches since Day 1)
  • Navel: 44 1/2  (-1 inch since Day 50, -4 1/2 inches since Day 1)
  • Hips: 41  (-1/2 inch since Day 50, -3 1/4 inches since Day 1)
  • Leg: 24 1/2  ( -1 inch since Day 50, -2.5 inches since Day 1)
  • Calf: 16 1/2  (-1/4 inches since Day 50,  -1 inch since Day 1)
  • Weight: 181.4 (-2.6 pounds since Day 50, -15.6 pounds since Day 1).

I also did a Fitness Test on Day 2 and repeated  it this morning to show my improvement in fitness level.   Below are the results:

  • Wall Sit (hold a 90 degree squat with your back against a wall and time yourself):  Day 2 = 23.8 seconds.  Day 60 = 1 minute 5.5 seconds
  • 1 Minute Push-ups (perform as many “real” push-ups as you can, then as many “girl” in 1 minute:  Day 2 = 0 real, 23 girl.  Day 60 = 5 real, 29 girl.
  • 1 Minute Sit-ups (perform as many sit-ups as you can with arms across your chest in 1 minute).  Day 2 = 0 real, Day 60 = 20
  • 1 Minute Crunches (this isn’t part of her test but since I couldn’t do any sit-ups on day 2 I did a minute of crunches.  I repeated today for comparison purposes):  Day 2 = 42, Day 60 = 58
  • 1 Minute Squat Thrust to Jump (basically it’s a burpee that you jump out of at the end):  Day 2 = 11, Day 60 = 16
  • 1 Minute High Knees (your knees should hit your hands at hip height) Day 2 = 90, Day 60 = 127.

I seriously can’t say enough good things about this program.  Not only did I lost a lot of weight and inches, but my fitness levels have improved across the board.   And for the first time in my life I can do a real pushup!  Below is a photo showing me wearing the same bathing suit on Day 1 and today (Day 60).  Even though my clothes had been fitting better I couldn’t “see” the change until I put these together.

THANK YOU Lindsay Brin for creating such a great program!

You’ve gotta take care of you! September 4, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — fitformyprinces @ 10:16 am

So often you hear Mom’s explain their weight gain by saying they spent years caring for everyone else in their family’s that they didn’t have the time to care for yourself.  I’ve been guilty of similar thoughts myself.  After all, I only have so few hours a day with my children (when I’m working) so I want to spend every last second with them that I can.  And at the end of it, I’m too tired to even think about exercising.

Well, this isn’t just a Mom issue.  My Mother-in-law is in a rehab center after suffering a massive stroke about 6 weeks ago.  My Father-in-law has not left her side for a single day since it happened other than to grab some quick meals, and to go home to sleep at night.  So he hasn’t gone to the fitness center and has been eating out almost exclusively for 6 weeks, while under the daily stress of wondering whether his wife of 49 years will recover enough to come home.  I think you can see where this is going.  Just this week he was taken to the ER because his blood pressure was spiking and he was disoriented.  And now he’s worried his pressure will stay high and he’ll have a stroke too.

I know he was doing what he thought he needed to do to care for the love of his life.  He was putting her first and thinking of himself second.  But if he did end up having a stroke or heart attack he wouldn’t help her at all.  In fact, she’d be so worried about him, I believe, her own recovery would be at risk.

So, the moral of the story, as I see it, is that you have to make yourself a priority and find time to work out and eat well.  If not, you may not be around at all to take care of them.

That will be a huge challenge for me when my maternity leave is over in a month.  My current plan is to wake up early (5AM) to workout before work.  The daily timing of it may slightly vary based on when B wakes up to nurse.  In fact, to get my body use to this schedule I plan on waking early to work out starting after the holiday weekend.
