Living healthy as a busy Mom with two little boys

Day 50 of 60 Day Slimdown August 28, 2011

50 of the 60 days are done.  This has been a rough 10 days.  First of all, my eating has not been quite spectacular.  We went to a party and brought cookies.  We ended up bringing them home with us and yours truly ate all of them over a few days.  And then two days ago I caught a cold and started to feel completely run down and congested.  I ended up taking 2 days off working out (they were actual rest days in the program).  I’m still feeling chest congestion today, but I’m not as tired and so I did manage to workout today.  I just listened to my body and did a lower intensity move when I needed to.

Below are my latest measurements (done every 10 days):

  • Dominant Arm:  12  ( -1/4 inch since Day 40-1 inch since Day 1)
  • Chest: 40  (-1/4 inch since Day 40, -2 inches since Day 1)
  • Neck: 13 1/2 (-0 inches since Day 40, -1 inch since Day 1)
  • Natural Waistline: 34 3/4  (-3/4 inch since Day 40, -7.75 inches since Day 1)
  • Navel: 45 1/2  (0 inches since Day 40, -3 1/2 inches since Day 1)
  • Hips: 41 1/2  (-1 inch since Day 40, -2 1/2 inches since Day 1)
  • Leg: 25 1/2  ( 0 inches since Day 40, -2 inches since Day 1)
  • Calf: 16 3/4  (0 inches since Day 40,  -3/4 inch since Day 1)
  • Weight: 184.0 (-1.4pounds since Day 40, -13 pounds since Day 1).

I’m in the homestretch of this program now.  And I’m so excited to finish strong.  I’ll wrap this program AND Couch to 5K up the same week.

I also bought a new “toy” this week and used it for the first time today.  I purchased a heart rate monitor.  I decided I wanted a better knowledge of my caloric burn while exercising.  It also holds me accountable for my workout intensity.

Also, I have tentatively decided the next “program” I will do is Firm Express.  Theoretically you are only to do three 20-minute workouts a week with this program so I will do that 3 days a week and throw in some yoga/pilates/zumba after to build my workout time up, and run on 3 other days that week as I still want to complete a 10K on Thanksgiving.

I had every intention of getting up early and running this morning.  I was shocked when the alarm went off.  Why?  Because I hadn’t had to get up and nurse my 2 month old at all in the night.  First thought, make sure he’s ok (let’s be honest Moms … that is our first reaction).  Second thought, Must wake him up to nurse him so he doesn’t wake up starving while the husband is home with him and I’m running.

So that’s what I do.  But, I can’t get him to go back to sleep so I scrap the run.  I’ll do it tomorrow (which I really will, I promise) and swap in some Zumba during naptime.

As the morning has progressed, however, my throat has gotten sore and I’m feeling more and more tired.  I’ve learned in my nearly 34 years that if I push through when my body puts on the brakes that I get really sick.  So, today will be devoted to rest … at least as much rest as a Mom of 2 can get.

I’ve got 12 days left of the slimdown (today and tomorrow are rest days on it anyway so I’m not missing anything) so I need to be well to finish strong.

It’s that time of year again…. August 23, 2011

B is now 2 months old and we had to take him to the pediatrician for his check-up.  While we were there they suggested that both C and I could get our flu vaccines as well.  Since C is now 2 1/2 he is able to do the Flu Mist instead of the injection like he’s had to have the last 2 years.  I also opted for the Flu Mist.  Most people who know me would think it’s because that method does not use a needle (which is true, I HATE needles).  My boys’ pediatrician has also explained why, in his opinion, the mist is preferable to the shot.  He says that the mist is a dead version of the live virus and so it causes your body to create your own antibodies to it, which is a better immune response.

Now I don’t pretend to be a medical expert by any means, but that sounds reasonable to me.  Now, I do know that not everyone can take the mist.  If you are pregnant, under two years of age, or have asthma, you need to have the shot.   Additionally, you cannot have any flu vaccine until you are at least 6 months of age.  And this is another reason why I’m glad to have had the Flu Mist.  B will not be 6 months of age until just before Christmas which is well into flu season.  But, because the Flu Mist causes my body to create it’s own antibodies, B will get the benefit as the antibodies are shared with him while he nurses.

It feels so nice to know that neither my children nor I should get the flu this year.  Now to get my husband to get his flu shot.  He has asthma so cannot get the benefit of the Mist, but the shot provides good coverage as well.

Day 40 of 60 Day Slimdown August 18, 2011

40 Days in and I’m feeling fantastic.  There have been MANY non-scale victories in the past 10 days.  I packed away all my maternity clothes and pulled out size 14 pants (I haven’t worn those since before I got pregnant with my now 2 1/2 year old).  Also, I’ve progressed far enough with couch to 5K that I did a 20 minute non-stop run.  Tomorrow I go out for 25 minutes straight.  I’m also so close to being able to do a real (non-girl) pushup.

Below are my measurements (done every 10 days):

  • Dominant Arm:  12 1/4  (0 inches since Day 30-3/4 inch since Day 1)
  • Chest: 40 1/4 (-1/4 inch since Day 30, –1 3/4 inches since Day 1)
  • Neck: 13 1/2 (-1/4 inch since Day 30, -1 inch since Day 1)
  • Natural Waistline: 35 1/2 (0 inches since Day 30, -7 inches since Day 1)
  • Navel: 45 1/2  (-1 1/2 inches since Day 30, -3 1/2 inches since Day 1)
  • Hips: 42 1/2  (-1/2 inch since Day 30, -1 1/2 inches since Day 1)
  • Leg: 25 1/2  ( -1/2 inch since Day 30, -2 inches since Day 1)
  • Calf: 16 3/4  ( 0 inches since Day 30,  -3/4 inch since Day 1)
  • Weight: 185.4 (-1.6 pounds since Day 10, -11.6 pounds since Day 1).

I’m glad with my loss, but I did go a bit out of control the past weekend eating animal crackers and trail mix.  Lots of it.  In fact, I’ve told my husband that if he catches me eating animal crackers anymore that he can give me a spanking.  LOL.  I have found that I really cannot stick with one serving so I need to just steer clear.  It’ll be interesting to see what next measurements hold.  I’m hoping to be beter with eating these next 10 days.

20 days left with this system.  I’m still trying to figure out which program to do next.

Moving on up …. August 15, 2011

Or in this case I’m movin’ on down.  I decided to pack away (hopefully not forever) all my maternity clothes since it’s been 8 weeks (tomorrow) since B was born.  I’m fortunate enough to have a walk-in closet of my very own (one of the reasons we bought this house) which was looking very bare, so I decided to go through my “skinny” clothes that I haven’t been able to wear in years.  I tried on several pairs of pants and was ecstatic to realize the size 14’s all fit.  Now I wouldn’t say they fit well, but I got them on and without too much trouble.  If I continue to have results like I have been, I should fit easily in them once I return to work in October.

2 sizes down…..4 or 5 to go!

Lean & Meaty Individual Thin Pizzas August 11, 2011

One of the hardest parts of eating healthy for me is pizza.  Inevitably if I’m watching what I’m eating my husband is not.  Typically he wants pizza at least once a week.  Now I’m ok with ordering him a pizza and me eating something else.  But then he feels bad that I ordered a pizza just for him.  So instead of feeling guilty I’ll indulge.  I wanted to create something with all the flavor of pizza, that was filling enough for my husband, and was low enough in calories to fit into my daily allowance.  We tweaked it over a couple of times making the recipe and I think I’m pretty much set.  My husband was skeptical but each time I made it, he said he enjoyed it and I “could make that again” (the highest form of praise for my cooking).

Lean & Meaty Individual Thin Pizzas
Makes 2 servings

Ingredients:

  • 1 Spinach & Asiago flavored chicken sausage link
  • 17 slices (1 serving) turkey pepperoni
  • 2 whole wheat sandwich thins, toasted*
  • 2 wedges Mozzarella & Sun-Dried tomato Laughing Cow Light cheese
  • 6-7 Tbsp pizza sauce
  • 1 1/3 cup part-skim, low-moisture shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Garlic powder & Italian seasoning, to taste

*Don’t toast fully as you will bake the pizzas after.  Toasting just ensures the “crust” is crispy and not soggy.

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven or toaster oven (what I used) to 400F.
  2. Lay 4 sandwich thin halves open-face style on a plate, cooking sheet, or cleaned counter.  Spread 1/2 wedge Laughing cow cheese on each half.
  3. Place about 1 1/2 Tbsp pizza sauce over top the Laughing Cow cheese.
  4. Remove casing from chicken sausage and chop meat into small pieces.  Chop pepperoni into small pieces as well.  Divide meats into 4 groups and place on top each of the four sandwich thin halves.
  5. Place approximately 1/3 cup shredded mozzarella on top of that.  Sprinkle with garlic powder and italian seasoning to taste.
  6. Bake in preheated oven for 5-10 minutes or until cheese is melted.

Day 30 of 60 Day Slimdown August 8, 2011

I’ve reached the halfway point for the 60 Day Slimdown Program.  To say I’m thrilled my results would be an understatement.

Below are my measurements (done every 10 days):

  • Dominant Arm:  12 1/4  (-1/4 inch since Day 203/4 inch since Day 1)
  • Chest: 40 1/2 (-1 inch since Day 20, 1 1/2 inches since Day 1)
  • Neck: 13 3/4 (-3/4 inch since Day 20 and Day 1)
  • Natural Waistline: 35 1/2 (-1 inch since Day 20, -7 inches since Da0y 1)
  • Navel: 47  (-1/2 inch since Day 20, -2 inches since Day 1)
  • Hips: 43  (no change  since Day 20, -1/2 inch since Day 1)
  • Leg: 25 1/2  (no change  since Day 20, -1 1/2 inches since Day 1)
  • Calf: 16 3/4  (-1/4 inch since Day 20,  -3/4 inch since Day 1)
  • Weight: 187.0 (-3.4 pounds since Day 10, -10 pounds since Day 1).

I’m now just 4 pounds away from my pre-pregnancy weight from my oldest child.  Plus I’m getting jeans to fit that never did before.  I’m not deluding myself.  I still have a long way to go (60 pounds from goal), but I’m making progress and that’s the most important part.
